5 common myths that are stopping you from getting stronger and trying other fitness or movement modalities...
MYTH #1 “Strength training and fitness is too aggressive and hard on my nervous system.”
Strength is for everyone. However, your experience will be determined by the teacher who you learn from.
This is why it’s helpful to learn from someone who has had similar challenges to you and understands how to teach it, so it won’t leave your nervous system feeling wrecked.
Wouldn’t it be great if strength training left you feeling as good as you do after yoga? True story - it can!
MYTH #2 “Learning strength training requires being in a competitive environment.”
Many of us have been to that miserable (and somewhat terrifying) class, where an instructor barked cues at you or scolded you for needing to slow down or use a lighter weight.
That’s not strength training.
That’s just shitty teaching from someone who isn’t trauma informed.
It IS possible to learn strength training and experience fitness without the need to compete or fear of judgement.
MYTH #3 “It’s impossible to find a cardio class that isn’t high impact, won’t hurt my joints, or doesn’t make me feel like a total loser.”
It’s possible to get your heart rate up and even take a HIIT class without ever having to jump. One reason why our joints may hurt during cardio classes is because we’re not strong enough and our tissues aren’t well prepared for that level of impact.
However, with the right options, cardio classes can be enjoyable AND effective.
MYTH #4 “I’m too old, out of shape, or injured to get started.”
Strength is for everyone.. Seriously.
I’ve worked with clients who were well into their 90’s...had a history of hypermobility...pain... injury...or were starting strength training or Pilates for the first time later in life. They ALL saw improvements in strength and mobility AND many of them are members and have experienced success taking the livestream and on demand classes.
MYTH #5 “I don’t have enough equipment or the funds to buy fancy weights and exercise equipment to see results at home."
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a J-Lo level home gym to improve your fitness at-home. Mostly, you just need some inexpensive props, such as resistance bands, two kettlebells or a set of dumbbells, and someone who can teach you how to incorporate those tools into a workout.

Mondays from 9:00 to 9:45 am PST w/ Nikki Naab-Levy
Class Description: Learn how to use specialized and inexpensive resistance bands called jumpstretch bands to build strength. It will include metabolic circuits with low impact and strength training based exercises to improve full body strength and muscle tone while also getting your heart rate up.
This is an ALL LEVELS class. However NO previous experience is required. BEGINNERS WELCOME!

Class Description: Get the experience of the Pilates reformer on the mat in this Pilates class series that includes flowing, creative sequences and functional movement based exercises to improve core strength, posture, and joint stability, while reducing muscle tension and stiffness.

Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:15 pm PST w/ Isabelle Barter
Class Description: This all levels kettlebell class will take you through a simple and effective workout to help you build strength. A GREAT class for beginners. We will focus on fundamental kettlebell exercises like the deadlift, swing, squat, lunge, row, press. We will also mix in get ups and other core work.
Equipment: Ideally 1 lighter kettlebell that you can press overhead and 1 heavier kettlebell for lower body exercises.

Hey, I'm Nikki. I'm a Pilates teacher and certified functional strength coach with over a decade of experience helping women build strength and overcome injury and I'm more than a little obsessed with helping people find effective and enjoyable ways to train.

I hold a B.S. in Exercise Science and B.S. Journalism and my fitness wisdom has been featured in Girls Gone Strong, The Seattle Times, and Men’s Fitness. I've also presented for national conferences and have been a featured educator in the Pilates community, but truthfully, I see myself as less of an expert and more of a teacher and cheerleader for my clients and I vastly prefer it that way.

Not going to lie. Without knowing your individual injury history, I can't tell you with full confidence that these classes will work for you. Tips on where to find kettlebells:
If you want cheap kettlebells to find out if you like them, you may be able to find something on Amazon. However, my favorite brand if/when you are ready to invest in some is Rogue. Another place where you may be able to find kettlebells is on the facebook marketplace.
As far as what weight to start with it really depends on the person. For women, I've found a nice set of "starter" weights includes a 6 OR 8 kg, 12 kg, and 16 kg kettlebell. To convert kilograms (kg) to pounds, multiple the number of kilograms by 2.2.
While you absolutely can use whatever you have to take class, let me explain WHY you may want to invest in jumpstretch bands and how they are different from the therabands/stretchy bands used in Pilates and yoga classes.
Jumpstretch bands are the same bands that you may have been seen used for assisted pull-ups. They are commonly used in the strength and conditioning space. Jumpstretch bands have a different level of tension and offer more feedback to the muscles than a stretchy band.
Generally speaking, jumpstretch bands are a tool that was developed specifically for increasing strength and research has even suggested that they are comparable to using weights, so while there is nothing wrong with a stretchy band, it has a different application. Stretchy bands are great for building stability and body awareness, but they're not the best tool for strength.
Finally, in many ways jumpstretch bands are an ideal option for strength training at-home, because there are lots of resistance options, they are inexpensive, easy to store, and they're a great place to get started with strength if you are hypermobile or have some mobility issues, because they can be easier to navigate than weights.
This was all a long winded way of saying use what you have, but you will probably find you get stronger faster and get a lot more out of the strength classes if you get the bands.
